Five Goalless Draws Tell the Story of a Tight and Nervous Round 28

If Round 28 proved anything, it is that nobody wants to make the mistake that ruins a season. Five of the nine Premier Soccer League matches ended 0 to 0. Scottland were held by FC Platinum, Chicken Inn could not get past MWOS, Ngezi Platinum Stars drew with FC Hunters, Triangle United frustrated Highlanders and ZPC Kariba shared the points with Simba Bhora.

The Harare derby between CAPS United and Dynamos finished 1 to 1, meaning six of the nine matches ended in draws. Only 11 goals were scored across the entire round. Hardrock contributed four of them in their 4 to 1 win over TelOne, so more than a third of all the goals came from one team.

There are several ways to read that. It can point to strong defending and good goalkeeping. It can also suggest teams are becoming more cautious as the season reaches the stage where one mistake can decide a title, a top four place or a relegation battle.

For Scottland, the goalless draw with FC Platinum felt particularly expensive because Hardrock won later in the round. The champions kept another clean sheet, but they could not score and their lead at the top was reduced to one point.

Highlanders also had to settle for another draw at Triangle United. Bosso have spent much of the season showing that they are difficult to beat, but too many draws have stopped them from turning that resilience into a stronger league position.

Ngezi Platinum Stars missed an opportunity as well. Their 0 to 0 draw with FC Hunters gave the visitors a useful point in the survival race, but Ngezi will feel they should have done more at home. Chicken Inn and MWOS also cancelled each other out. Chicken Inn had come into the match with confidence after beating Dynamos in their previous league game, but they could not build on it. At Nyamhunga Stadium, ZPC Kariba and Simba Bhora produced another goalless result, adding to a weekend in which attacking players found very little space.

Not every 0 to 0 match is a poor game. Some are tense, tactical and full of good defending. But when five arrive in the same round, it becomes a pattern worth noticing. Round 28 still gave supporters two excellent goals in the Harare derby and a four goal performance from Hardrock. For much of the league, though, the weekend was about caution, concentration and the growing fear of being the team that makes the costly mistake.
